Toni Speaks...

To the Citizens of League City:

It seems my opponent and some contributors to the League City Blog have been making allegations and untrue statements regarding certain issues.  I would like to take this opportunity to set the records straight.

My opponent has twisted my words to lead people to believe I am in favor of a sanctuary city.  I AM NOT in favor, nor have I ever been in favor of a sanctuary city.  The term "sanctuary city" means different things to different people.  A person, regardless of their immigration status, should be accountable under the law.  Local Law Enforcement can respond to complaints regarding violations of penal law.  However, local Law Enforcement cannot confront a person to solely inquire about their immigration status.  That falls under the racial profiling issues that we have been faced with over the past few years, and that could lead to civil rights violations.  Only the U.S. Immigration Services can deport an illegal alien, not municipal police officers.  An illegal alien can be arrested for violating penal laws; however, the decision to become involved in their immigration status falls upon the U. S. Immigration Service only.  Illegal aliens do provide cheap labor to the work force, and as long as there is a demand for their services it will be difficult to remove the problem. My opponent claims he can solve this very serious issue, therefore I suggest he go straight to Washington.

My opponent has also stated that I do not care about, nor that I could work with, CCISD because I homeschool my child.  Both my husband and I are products of CCISD and we have very fond memories of the times we spent in school.  My husband’s retirement has allowed us the opportunity to spend time with our immediate and extended family while we can.  Our decision to homeschool will not interfere in my working relationship with CCISD. For many years I have been a contributer and supporter to numerous booster clubs and school organizations.

It has been written that I was expelled from CCISD.  NOT True.

My opponent stated that he was the person who brought the Glen Cove bridge issue to the residents of Glen Cove.  Again, not true.  We initiated several neighborhood meetings long before my opponent became involved.  My family has remained silent about the issues concerning the bridge and canal at the advice of our attorneys which we have had on retainer for three-plus years.

It has been written that I have been supplying bulkhead materials for the bulkheading of the Glen Cove canal. Again, not true.

It has been written that I have been selling building supplies to the builders of all of the different apartment complexes.  Again, not true.

It has been written that I am avoiding public speaking and feel that I have this election won.  Again, not true.  I have said that this thirty day period preceeding the runoff will be the hardest time.  I know I must get the voters back out to vote again.  I do not believe this race is over until the votes are counted on June 14th.  I have made several public appearances. I have made myself available by phone, and via email.  I am running my campaign on my own merits. I have no campaign manager or handlers. It is not uncommoon to see me riding my moped through the neighborhoods meeting people.

It has been written that I am making plans to replace certain city employees.  Again, not true.  I have already met with several members of city staff and assured them that if elected, I have no intention of walking in and firing anyone.  Yes, I will evaluate job performance over a period of time, but everyone will have the opportunity to do their job, as they should.  I believe city staff is very capable of doing their jobs, if allowed to do so.
