Replace Mayor in League City

By Heber Taylor

The Galveston County Daily News

Published April 30, 2008

In the race for League City Mayor, we recommend Toni Randall, a business owner who became politically involved when her father-in-law became embroiled in a dispute with the city about his gun range.

Chris Mallios, who has been a member of The Daily News' readers advisory board, has an encyclopedic knowledge of League City and is a champion of open government. But we think voters would be best served by entrusting the office to someone with a lot of experience in managing a business or institution.

Randall has a background in business. She's plainspoken and believes in customer service. She strikes us as the kind of person who would let the professional people on the city's payroll do their jobs.

A Mayor Who Has All The Answers?

Being a teacher, I find the hardest thing to teach a student is how to find answers. They just want us to give them the questions and answers for them to give back to us. There is not always going to be a reliable source to just give us the answer. We need to teach students how to think through a problem and find the right answer.

Being a former inexperienced mayor, I applied this principle to learning how to run a city. I am sure I made mistakes and could have done some things in a different way, but I believe League City did well in my seven years as mayor.

Deciding on where my vote for mayor would go this year was difficult. The two current candidates have made the choice easy. Toni Randall admits she does not know all about running a city. She says she knows how to find the answers and solve problems. Chris Mallios says he knows everything about the city and can solve all the problems. Since I know many of Mallios’ views, I know many of them have been tried — and have failed. A person who thinks he has all the answers scares me.

I am, therefore, voting for Randall. She has shown that she has learned what teachers try to convey to all their students. She may not have all the answers, but she knows how to research and find the answers. I look forward to seeing how she will do as mayor. It cannot be any worse than the last two who had all the answers.

Randall Would Make A Great League City Mayor

League City needs new leadership and the upcoming election gives us the chance to affect that change.

Having just learned that Toni Randall has filed to run for mayor of the city in the upcoming election, I invite the entire community to closely consider her as the candidate of choice.

Randall, a native of League City, is a successful businesswoman who is well liked and respected by both her employees and customers.

If elected, she will bring this successful management style to the office of mayor and the city will be managed — as it should be — ethically and equitably.

Randall For League City Mayor Is A Smart Choice

I first noticed Toni Randall while purchasing S.S. screws for an old boat at Kemah Hardware more than 12 years ago. Since then, Kemah Hardware has become my “go to” place for the things I need for most of my projects.

While shopping there, I have noticed a very low turnover of employees at the store, which is usually a result of respect, trust and loyalty toward management.

Although I really don’t know Randall well, I do know the way she runs her business and, when I heard she was running for mayor of League City, I thought I could vote for a person like her.

And then, when I understood she would not accept monetary donations for her campaign, I thought this is somebody I know I could trust and support.

Randall appears to be a no-nonsense, businesslike, confident, hard-working lady. At a recent get-to-know-Toni rally, she said that she is not a “politician”; well, enough said — she is my choice for mayor.

If we want an honest mayor who will work hard to win the respect of others in city government, I suggest we consider Toni Randall, as I am sure she will not disappoint us.

Only Randall Can ‘Change’ Our City For The Better

Toni Randall has written a letter responding to many of the concerns expressed by voters. She did not want to get into this kind of campaign of having to defend herself against false allegations. Voters can read her response on her Web site, www.tonirandall.net.

It has been said she is not available to the public. She has been to several homeowners’ association meetings and community gatherings. Our family hosted a “meet and greet” for her Sunday.

We need a mayor who is a people person and will work for residents, not special-interest groups. We need a mayor who is for the people, of the people and by the people.

We ask the voters of League City to vote for Toni Randall — it is the only way we can change the future of our city for the better.

Randall Will ‘Learn And Listen’ To Run City Right

Our most important responsibility is to elect good people to govern our cities, counties, state and nation.

For more than 20 years, I have worked at business development and taught human motivation. The one thing these two areas have taught me is to appreciate the person who comes upon a new experience listening and learning. The individual “with all the answers” usually is not a listener and seldom a learner.

We have running for mayor a man with all the answers and a woman who says she will approach the office with an attitude of learning and of listening. Give me a person who will listen and learn every time.

Toni Randall has not held office but does have the ability to use good people and make sure League City is properly run.

In-Touch Randall Is One Of League City’s Very Own

It’s not often that I find myself in agreement with newspaper endorsements of political candidates. But, this time, I think The Daily News has got it right. League City seems plagued with political scandal and we keep kicking the bums out — only to replace them with more bums.

We’ve let developers’ lap dogs, lawyers, bankers and entrenched politicians have their shots at us. It’s time for an ordinary person, a small-business owner who is in touch with the regular guy on the street, to have the chance. Thank you, Daily News, for endorsing Toni Randall for mayor. She’s one of our own.
